We are searching for our next Executive Director!

BookGive is Denver’s nonprofit free book resource delivering over 5,000 per month to over 350 organizations annually. Our mission is to increase and improve book access throughout metro Denver.

We are a unique model, partnering with local independent bookstore, The Bookies, a public benefit corporation that donates a percentage of profits to support BookGive. Since our inception in 2020, we have proven the need for both a place for conscientious readers to donate books and a reliable free resource for high quality books for all ages.

BookGive receives book donations from the community, bookstores, and publishers. We purchase hard-to-acquire books from wholesale distributors. We are home to Denver’s only Free Book Room and host two seasonal public book giveaways.

Our organization is supported by over 100 active volunteers who are at the the heart of our mission. We pride ourselves on providing meaningful volunteer opportunities rallied around our goal to make sure all our neighbors have access to high quality books.

OPPORTUNITY

BookGive is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as our next Executive Director. This emerging executive will support current operations and set up the conditions for new programming in future years. This individual will be the primary face of BookGive, managing fundraising and community partnerships and have full bottomline fiscal responsibility for the organization.

The ideal candidate is a social entrepreneur who has strong connections withing the nonprofit sector and/or book provisions industry. They come ready to continue BookGive’s current relationships within Denver metro and local philanthropic leaders, and ready to bring new connections who can accelerate BookGive’s impact. This person is driven by a commitment to equitable access for people of all kinds throughout the seven-county metro region.. Additionally, the executive has experience with building community and leading with diverse teams. Specifically, this individual is skilled at building an internal culture that is constantly striving to be inclusive and equitable for all stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Executive Director is the key management leader, overseeing the administration, operations, programs, and strategic direction of the organization. Critical duties include budget planning, fundraising, marketing, and community outreach. this is an exempt, salaried position. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Board Governance

  • Works with the Board to fulfill BookGive’s mission, as defined by the Board of Directors
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing all information necessary for the Board to function, develop and update policies, and make decisions.

Financial Performance and Viability

  • Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.
  • Responsible for fundraising and development of other revenues necessary to support the mission.
  • Responsible for planning and implementation of annual budget.
  • Files the annual 990 and oversees financial audits.
  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of BookGive, to include submission of proposed annual budget and accurate monthly financials to the Board.
  • Responsible for fiscal management that anticipates operating within the approved budget, maximizes resource utilization, and maintains a positive financial position.

Organization Mission and Strategy

  • Works with Board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
  • Responsible for the implementation of programs that carry out the mission.
  • Responsible for strategic planning to ensure the success of the mission into the near-and-long-term future.
  • Responsible for the enhancement of BookGive’s public image by being active and visible in the community and working closely with other professional, civic, and private organizations.
  • Serves as BookGive’s primary spokesperson to constituents, the media, and the general public.
  • Oversees marketing and all other communication efforts

Organization Operations

  • Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization point to the mission.
  • Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff, paid and non-paid.
  • Responsible for the effective administration of day-to-day operations.
  • Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into on behalf of BookGive.
  • Oversees the maintenance of the Service Station headquarters.
  • Establishes employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for day-to-day operations.

Priorities

A successful first year in this role for the new Executive Director will include:

  • Overseeing all fundraising for the organization to exceed revenue goal of $200,000 including $55,000 in private donations.
  • Developing corporate and grant fundraising strategies to raise $30,000.
  • Leading and managing multiple volunteer teams to fulfill operational goals and execute events.
  • Working with the Board of Directors to recruit new board members.
  • Expanding and efficiently utilizing the Advisory Council.

  • A leader who engages a variety of individuals and speaks in a clear and compelling manner about BookGive’s goals and priorities.
  • Culturally competent and self-reflective leader who understands the effects of marginalization.
  • Well-connected withing the nonprofit sector, book provisions industry, and/or philanthropic organizations in the Denver metro area.
  • Fully competent with fiscal management and budgeting.
  • A master marketer with honed skills in messaging and branding.
  • An excellent communicator with a heart for interpersonal relationships.
  • A creative, joyful person.
