Our History

Founded in 2019

BookGive was founded in 2019 by Nicole Sullivan, owner of The Bookies and BookBar Press. She started an annual book exchange in 2009, with more than 10,000 books changing hands and just as many donated to local schools and nonprofit organizations in need of books.

That community-based event proved two important needs: a place for conscious readers to donate books and a centralized free book hub to meet the book needs of the service sector. After ten years, it was time to incorporate a new organization, a nonprofit completely focused on free books.

In 2019, Nicole became the founding donor and board president of BookGive, purchasing the service station as its headquarters and hiring its founding executive director, Melissa Monforti.

Since 2019, with the help of over 200 volunteers, BookGive has served over 550 unique organizations and delivered over 275,000 books.

BookGive’s success lands squarely on the shoulders of our founding leadership.
